The overhanging gardens of Marqueyssac in the Dordogne

by Susan Keefe.

These spectacular gardens are situated close to the chateau of Marqueyssac, and can be found on the Dordogne river between Beynac and La Roque-Gageac in the South West of France.

The gardens are listed as a National Historical Monument.

Visitors will be treated to incredible swirling patterned displays of clipped box hedging, there are also more than 6 kilometres of walks with wonderful views and woods which are beautifully under planted with box. If this is not enough there are stone huts, pergolas, and other structures of interest such as a ‘sea of heads’ to admire whilst you wander to your destination, the 192 metre high belvedere which, when reached, rewards you with stunning river views.

Visitors who have disability, wheelchairs or pushchairs can still enjoy The Great walk which is easy and even has a shuttle service between the view point and the chateau.

More information including prices, events, and opening times can be found on their website http://marqueyssac.com/?lang=en
