Le Bois des Moutiers at Varengeville sur Mer

by Susan Keefe.

At the age of only 29, the famous British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, inspired by the “Arts and Craft” movement and the ideas of its founder William Morris built the house at Bois des Moutiers in Varengevile sur Mer.

The gardens were seen as an extension of the house and these are enclosed and very structured. They were also designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, in collaboration with Guillaume Mallet, the owner, and the famous landscape painter Miss Gertrude Jekyll.

The 12 hectare park which is situated in a valley facing the sea was planted by Guillaume Mallet and its natural acidic soil, which is unusual in the Pays de Caux, enabled it to be planted with many rare species such as Himalayan Rhododendrons, Chilean Eucryphias, Chinese Azaleas and Japanese Maples.

The gardens, situated at Varengeville-sur-Mer 76119, are open from Mid-March to Mid-November.
